Among the six municipalities in the province, the municipality of Siquijor (provincial capital), which comprised 25.92 percent of the total provincial population, was the largest in terms of population size. This was closely followed by the municipality of Lazi with 22.44 percent. The municipalities of Maria, San Juan and Larena contributed 15 percent each while Enrique Villanueva had the least population, 6.57 percent of the total for the province. Siquijor had the least population in Region VII, or 1.6 percent of the 4,594,124 persons in the region. At the national level, Siquijor contributed less than one percent to the total Philippine population of 76.5 million as recorded in the Census 2000. |
|
| Male population slightly outnumbered their female counterparts with a sex ratio of 100.4 males for every 100 females. There were more males than females in the age bracket 1 to 39 years. As the age advanced to 40 years onwards, except in the age group 45 to 49 years, however, the females dominated their male counterparts. In 2000, Siquijor had a median age of 25 years, higher than the 1995 median age of 24 years. The 0 to14 age group made up 32.17 percent of the population while those aged 65 years and above comprised 8.47 percent. Thus, the economically active population, aged 15 to 64 years, was 58.82 percent of the total population in Siquijor. |

|
The overall dependency ratio in 2000 was 69.1. This meant that for every 100 persons aged 15 to 64 years, there were about 69 dependents (55 persons aged 0 to 14 years - young dependents; and 14 persons aged 65 years and over - old dependents). The 2000 ratio is lower than the 79 ratio reported in 1995.
Of the total household population five years old and over, almost half (47.82 percent) had attended or completed elementary education. Twenty six percent had either attended or finished high school while 7.78 percent had attended college. Only four percent were academic degree holders. More than half of those who had attended or finished elementary education (51.7 percent) and post secondary (55.8 percent) were males. On the other hand, those who had attended or finished high school, college and post baccalaureate were predominantly females.
Almost all (98.6 percent) of the household population in Siquijor classified themselves as Bisaya/Binisaya. Relatively small percentages classified themselves as Cebuano (0.10 percent), Boholano (0.08 percent) or Kankanaey (0.06 percent).
Less than half (46.06 percent) of those who were 10 years old and over were married, While 43.75 percent were single. The remaining ten percent were either widowed, divorced/separated, common-law/live-in or with unknown marital status.
There were 18,034 housing units in Siquijor, of which 17,351 were occupied. This registered an increase of 12.05 percentage points from 1990 and recorded a ratio of 1.01 household per occupied housing unit or a ratio of 4.7 household population per occupied housing unit.
Almost all (98.68 percent) of the occupied housing units were single houses. Seven out of ten occupied housing units needed no repair/minor repair. Less than one fourth were relatively new (built from 1996 to 2000).
As to the construction materials used for housing units, less than three fourths (71.95 percent) of the occupied housing units had roofs made of galvanized iron/aluminum as compared to only 44.6 percent in 1990. Moreover, one third of the occupied housing units had walls made of wood while more than one fourth were made of bamboo/sawali/cogon/nipa. |
