NUEVA ECIJA
Nueva Ecija , the largest province in Cental Luzon is landlocked by the provinces of Pangasinan and Nueva Vizcaya in the north, the province of Aurora in the east, the province of Tarlac in the west, and the provinces of Pampanga and Bulacan in the south. Four large rivers, Pampanga River, Rio Chico, Diaman River and Peρaranda River traverse Nueva Ecija. Spanish Gov. Gen. Fausto Cruzar created the province and named it after his hometown, Ecija in Seville, Spain. It acquired the towns of Gapan, San Isidro, Cabiao, San Antonio, and Aliaga from Pampanga in 1848. Baler and Casiguran were separated from Nueva Ecija in 1853. Palanan was transferred first to Nueva Vizcaya then to Isabela, with the separation of Infanta and Polilo Island, the province isolation from the sea became complete. It was one of the first eight provinces to rebel from the Spanish rule in 1896. On May 9, 1899, Cabanatuan was made the temporary seat of the government upon Gen. Aguinaldo's retreat during the Filipino-American War. When American forces occupied Nueva Ecija in 1899, the provincial seat of government was in San Isidro. R. A. No. 4475 created the city of Palayan as the new capital on June 19, 1965.
