LAGUNA
Laguna hugs the country's largest freshwater lake. Its culture, history and economy are intimately connected with this body of water.
The Laguna de Bay forms the northern shore of the province. Moving northeasterly, the shore proceed to the common border with the province of Rizal, while moving northwesterly, the coast runs to the edge of Metro Manila. On the east and southeast, the Sierra Madre mountains run along the border with Quezon and dormant volcanoes.
Rain falls evenly throughout the year in the east. The western part of the province experiences a pronounced dry season from November to April and a wet season the rest of the year.
Laguna derives its name from "La Laguna" (the lake), referring to Laguna de Bay, the largest inland body of water in the Philippines.
Rain falls evenly throughout the year in the east. The western part of the province experiences a pronounced dry season from November to April and a wet season the rest of the year.
Laguna and surrounding areas were conquered for Spain in 1571, by Captain Juan de Salcedo. Seven years later, Franciscan friars started the work of Christianization. Soon, towns around the lake were founded.
The town of Bay was the capital of the province until 1688, when it was transferred to Pagsanjan and later in 1852, to Sta. Cruz.
Laguna was one of the eight provinces to rise in revolt against Spain. It was also the home province of the national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal who was born in Calamba

It was the 11th census of population and 5th census of housing undertaken in this country since the first census in 1903. It was designed to take an inventory of the total population and housing units all over the Philippines and to collect information about their characteristics. Census day for the Census 2000 was May 1, 2000 (12:01 a.m.). Enumeration started on May 1, 2000 and lasted for about 30 days. |
