This is the thirteenth year of the month-long celebration since it was proclaimed (Proclamation No. 647) on 20 September 1990 by then President Corazon C. Aquino. The observance of the yearly event aims to promote, enhance and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics and to elicit cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standard of statistics in the country.
In line with the tradition of making the activities for the celebration relevant to current thrusts and priorities, this year’s observance of the NSM has for its theme "Responsive Statistics for Good Governance." Various programs and activities for the celebration have been scheduled and prepared by different government agencies, offices, bureaus and instrumentalities, academic and research institutions, and private sector groups and organizations both at the national and local level. There will be exhibits, statistical contests and conduct of training, seminars, workshops, symposia, conferences, and other similar activities that will highlight the various products and services of the host agencies. Streamers carrying the theme for this year’s NSM celebration shall also be displayed nationwide. At the regional and provincial level, there will be motorcades around the town plazas and business districts.
For the opening ceremonies, the NSO has prepared two special presentations : the Decentralized Registry of Establishments System (DRES) and the Data kit of official Philippine Statistics (Datos). The DRES is a computer system designed to maintain information on business establishments. The system automates the business permit registration and licensing process of local government units and helps update NSO’s listing of establishments for its survey sampling frame. Datos, on the other hand, is an information package in compact disc and contains the latest statistical database of the country up to the barangay level. It is user-friendly and allows instant analysis, computes simple calculations, creates and prints thematic maps.
According to NSO Administrator Carmelita Ericta, also in the pipeline for presentation this month of October are the highlights of the results of the Survey on Children. The activity is also in line with the celebration of National Children’s Month.
