Capiz’s Annual Population Growth Rate Down to 1.00 Percent (Results from the 2000 Census of Population and Housing, NSO)
Population growth rate registered at 1.00 percent
The results of the 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000) showed that the province of Capiz recorded a total population of 654,156 persons. The figure was higher by 29,687 persons over the 1995 census results. It registered a 1.00 percent annual population growth rate, lower by 0.26 percentage point than that of 1995 (1.26 percent). A corresponding increase on the number of households was also observed, from 119,885 households in 1995 to 128,569 households in 2000. This resulted to an average household size of 5.08 persons, lower than the 5.21 average household size recorded in 1995.
Roxas City, the provincial capital, was the largest in terms of population size
Among the sixteen municipalities and one city of Capiz, Roxas City, the provincial capital, had the largest population comprising 19.32 percent of the total provincial population. Followed next were the municipalities of Tapaz (6.74 percent); Panay (6.21 percent); Dumarao (6.16 percent); and Pontevedra (6.13 percent). On the other hand, Sapi-an, Cuartero, Ivisan and Dumalag had the smallest population with less than 4.00 percent each.
More than half of the population were below 21 years old
The province had a median age of 21 years, higher than the 1995 median age of 20 years.
Capiz had a male population of 329,006 persons, higher than its female counterpart of 325,150 persons. This figure resulted to a sex ratio of 101.19 males for every 100 females. There were more males in the age group 0 to 49 years, except for the age bracket 40 to 44 years. On the other hand, there were more females in the 50 years and above age group.
Three in five persons belonged to economically active population
Economically active population (aged 15 to 64 years) comprised 58 percent of the total population. Young dependents, aged 0 to 14 years comprised 37.10 percent while 4.89 percent as old dependents aged 65 years and above. The overall dependency ratio was 72.40, lower than the 1995 ratio of 78.84. This meant that for every 100 economically active persons, there were 72 dependents, of which, 64 persons were young dependents and 8 persons were old dependents.
More females pursued higher education
Among the household population aged five years old and over, 48.03 percent had attended/completed elementary education; 25.30 percent, high school; and 4.31 percent, post secondary education. Academic degree holders comprised 3.95 percent; 7.31 percent, college undergraduates; less than one percent (0.73), with post-baccalaureate studies. There were more males than females among those who had attended or finished elementary (52.78 percent) and post-secondary courses (52.33 percent). On the other hand, there were more females who had attended/completed high school (51.63 percent), were college undergraduates (53.39 percent), were academic degree holders (64.20 percent), and attended/completed post baccalaureate courses (59.95 percent).
Capizeños comprised 97.15 percent of the household population
In Capiz, 97.15 percent of the household population classified themselves as Capizeños. The rest were either Hiligaynon/Ilonggo (0.58), Badjao, Sama Dilaut (0.22 percent), Manobo/Ata-Manobo (0.11 percent) or belonged to other ethnic groups (1.94 percent).
Proportion of married individuals down by 1.36 percentage points
Of the 493,791 total population aged 10 years and over, married persons comprised 43.82 percent, lower by 1.36 percentage points than the 1995 figure (45.18). Single persons, widowed and with other arrangements constituted 47.06 percent, 4.83 percent and 2.82 percent, respectively. Separated/divorced persons constituted 0.58 percent, higher than the 0.40 percent recorded in 1995.
Almost 100 percent occupancy rate
In Capiz, there were 127,164 housing units, of which 127,150 were occupied by 128,569 households. An occupancy rate of 99.99 percent was recorded, higher by 1.02 percentage points than the 1990 figure (97.75 percent). More than 95 percent of the occupied housing units in Capiz were single houses.
Of the occupied housing units, majority (71.6 percent) did not need repair or if needed one, with minor repair only while almost 19 percent needed major repair. Two out of five occupied housing units were relatively new, built from1996 to 2000.
About three out of five houses had strong materials for roof
Majority (58.2 percent) of the housing units in Capiz used galvanized iron/aluminum as material of the roof. The proportion was higher than the 31.8 percent recorded in 1990. On the other hand, the proportion of roof made of cogon/nipa/anahaw declined from 64.4 percent in 1990 to 33.7 percent in 2000. The use of concrete/brick/stone as construction material of the outer walls increased from 6.4 percent in 1990 to 16.7 percent in 2000.

CAPIZ
Capiz is situated in the northeastern part of Panay Island. Sibuyan Sea bounded it on the north, Iloilo on the east and south, Antique on the west, and the province of Aklan on the northwest.
In 1213, Bornean datus organized Capiz, then part of Aklan as a "sakop" (political unit) of Panay. It was believed that the name Capiz was derived from the Visayan word kapid, meaning "twins". In 1570, when the Spaniards arrived, twin children were born to Datu Bankaya, the ruler of Aklan. Somehow, the natives unconsciously miscommunicated this to the Spaniards as the name of the place, so the Spaniards adopted the name Capiz. Capiz was made into a province under Act No. 2711 on March 10, 1917 and it included what is now Aklan until it was separated in 1956.
Agriculture is the main industry in the province and major crops are rice, corn, coconut and sugarcane. There are rich offshore fishing grounds and cottage industries that include weaving of piña and jusi. Tourist attractions are the Panay church, Pilar caves and the Halaran festival every first week of October.
